Frequently Asked Questions about Garbage Disposals
The garbage disposal is installed directly beneath the sink and is used to shred food to minimize wet waste and odor in the trash. All moving parts within the appliance are blunt – there are no knives or blades. A disc inside spins at approximately 1,700 revolutions per minute. This creates a centrifugal force that spins the food waste outwards, crushes it then grinds finely with moving metal hammers. The resulting mass is disposed of via the wastewater drain.
No, the garbage disposal does not use sharp blades, but the high speeds of the grinding mechanism can cause injuries if you reach deep into the appliance while it is in operation. Familiarize yourself with the safety instructions in the user manual before use.
- Do not reach into the garbage disposal while on.
- Ensure no metallic objects, including cutlery or jewelry, fall into the garbage disposal when it is running.
- Make sure the splash guard is in place so that food does not fly out.
- Do not run the garbage disposal without water.
- Do not let children use the garbage disposal unsupervised.
- Avoid the following: long-fibered food, such as artichoke leaves, celery and corn husks. Refrain from adding larger bones, mussels or oyster shells.
- Do not feed the following into the disposer under any circumstance: garden waste; any non-organic waste such as glass, ceramic, plastic or metal; grease, fat and oil; corrosive drainpipe cleaners/openers; as well as strong chemicals like strong acids, solvents and paints.
You can grind most everyday food waste, including leftover meats, fast food, most fruits and vegetables, food prep waste, avocado pits, banana peels, smaller bones (feed in smaller portions), eggshells and ground coffee (requires more water to be run).
- Fill the disposer grinding chamber with a mix of ice cubes and citrus wedges (lemon, lime or orange). Switch on the disposer briefly to shred the mixture. Leave the partially shredded mixture in the disposer for 30 minutes before using it again.
- The ice cubes clean the grinding chamber, and the citric acid removes the bad odors and reduces lime scale. Alternatively, you can use citric acid, baking soda or gentle detergents to eliminate bad odors.
For daily or regular cleaning, run hot water through the disposer between the individual grinding processes. For weekly cleaning or as needed, fill the grinding chamber with hot water, add a few drops of dish detergent and run with the splash guard on. Alternatively, fill the grinding chamber with ice cubes and run until all the ice is shredded. Clean the splash guard with a brush using dish soap and water. The strainer is dishwasher safe.
